It should be pointed out that the perfective forms of these verbs are произойти and случиться. So, without further delay, let’s get straight to sample sentence number one: One could say Где это произошло? or Где это случилось? and in either case it would mean «Where did it happen?» Since either происходить or случаться could be the focus word here we have a bit of a dilemma. Let’s toss a coin to select the focus word here. Heads происходить and tails it’s случаться. (toss coin) Ah, heads, and so происходить it is. And now for sample sentence two: Надеюсь, что этого с вами никогда не случится. and Надеюсь, что этого с вами никогда не произойдёт. both mean «I hope that never happens to you.» However, the focus word here is a form of надеяться which means to hope or wish.
